Off Cut Culture Club Vendor: Lavish Society Co.

Lavish Society Co.

Jane, Co-Owner

What inspired you to start this business?

The idea started when we (Jane and her sister Jean) were picking out a bouquet of flowers to give to our mother. It was our parents’ 30th wedding anniversary, and we wanted to buy a super elaborate rose bouquet, but we were struggling with the idea of spending so much money on something that wasn’t going to last more than a week. We started looking at alternatives when we stumbled across preserved roses. We knew immediately that this could change the game of rose-gifting.

Rose arrangement boxes became our passion project—we became obsessed with researching and sourcing the best products possible. Eventually, our purpose grew to serving our fellow Calgarians, and Lavish Society Co. launched in Summer 2017.

What do you like most about your business?

We love that Lavish Society Co. has become an outlet for our creativity. Jean and I both work day jobs, and Lavish Society Co. has become a project where can channel our skills and creativity towards something tangible and beautiful.  Our business has also been a great opportunity for us to bond together as sisters, and we’ve grown so much closer since starting our business.

What do you like most about running your business in Calgary?

We love Calgary; it’s our home. Calgary is a wonderful city with a vibrant and supportive community. We support our local businesses whenever possible, and we’ve been fortunate enough to experience the same level of support in return. We really believe that Calgary is the right place for Lavish Society Co. to develop and grow our presence.

How do you feel Calgary’s culture has changed or developed in the last few years?

Togetherness is the first word that comes to mind when I think about Calgary’s culture.  As unfortunate as the 2013 floods were, it was the first time “togetherness” had a real, tangible impact of our lives.  In 2013, Jean woke up in her apartment building, surrounded by flood water. The amount of local support that she received during that time had a resounding impact on her. Since then, Jean and I have been supporting local in any way possible.

Where are your favourite stomping grounds in Calgary?

We love being active. You’ll often find Jean at HotShop, a local yoga and spin studio, and myself at Sunridge Badminton Centre getting our sweat on. Don’t be fooled though, we are “work out to eat” kind of gals. You’ll find us around town, tasting and sipping from the newest joints in YYC.

Why do you feel it is important to collaborate with other businesses in Calgary?

We value the quality and the integrity behind products. You know how you can feel the quality of a product within the first five seconds of it being in your hands? In those five seconds, you can also feel a little bit of the love, work and passion that went into bringing that product to life. That’s what we strive for with our products, and that’s what we look for when collaborating with like-minded entrepreneurs.

Where do you find inspiration / where do you go to feel inspired?

We are constantly on Instagram looking at different arrangement styles, event settings and venue stylings. We also get a lot of our inspiration from the outdoors. We love to hike and get out into nature to find inspiration.
